Casey* had her heart set on marrying Alex*, the man of her dreams, but just hours before the wedding ceremony her world came crashing down. She received several highly suggestive messages that her soon-to-be husband had been having an affair with another woman which had been going on for months.
Casey made the bold decision not to cancel the wedding but instead planned an epic act of revenge for which the ceremony was the perfect stage. After which she decided to share her tale of betrayal and vengeance with the world.
We should start from the beginning. Before the heartbreaking texts arrived, Casey was a typical, ecstatic bride-to-be, counting down the days to her wedding and spending time with a group of close friends.
They were all spending time together in a fancy hotel which had been chosen especially for this special time before the wedding to reconnect and catch up. On this momentous occasion, Casey’s “last day of freedom”, the champagne was naturally flowing like water.
The Australian couple had reportedly been together for six years and apparently Casey had known right away that Alex was The One for her.
After dating for so long, their families also knew each other and had become close. Everything was all set for a perfect day, one Casey fully expected would be the best of her life – making all her dreams come true.
Casey was therefore not at all surprised when her phone buzzed with a new message. She had been receiving congratulations all day and had no reason to believe this new message was anything different. She picked up her champagne flute, and laughingly made her way across the hotel room to her phone to see what it was.
One of the bridesmaids noted that Casey’s phone had been going off all the time that night.
But instead of congratulations, this text message reportedly delivered only devastation, heartbreak and tears. It turns out that Alex had not been the loyal and committed partner he presented himself to be.
The text actually revealed that Alex had been cheating on Casey with another woman, and she was now looking at the dirty messages he had been sending and receiving from the other woman. The messages were explicit and allegedly contained detailed proof of their relationship.
Next to the screenshots of the graphic texts, a question reportedly appeared: “I wouldn’t marry him. Will you?” While scrolling through the texts, the true scope of the devastating betrayal was revealed to Casey.
There were messages from a few days before, but also messages going back months!
That was the moment when Casey seemingly realized that the messages were probably telling the truth about what had been going on behind her back. She couldn’t hold back her tears as she was looking through them.
Casey later told writer Danielle Colley that “Every word was like a dagger in my heart,” in a story published on Whimn in November 2018.
Clinical psychologist, Dr. Rowan Burckhardt, appearing in a video that accompanies the Whimn story, talks about the Psychology of Cheating.
He supposes that there are two main reasons that cause infidelity. The first being that the cheater feels there are problems in the relationship. The second is that the betrayer does not have romantic feelings for their partner.
In the video, Dr. Burckhardt claims that a common reaction to the first case is to react to the trouble by walking “out of the relationship” right into the waiting arms of another. In the second instance, the partner who has stopped having feelings, seeks his “romantic connection” somewhere else.
He explains that this makes the “attraction for a person outside the relationship becomes all the greater.”
Although Casey was clearly not thinking about the psychology of cheating at the time, she spent a long sleepless night wondering what to.
Casey reportedly came to the decision that since the wedding money had all been spent and all the guests had already arrived, some from far away, cancelling didn’t make sense. She therefore apparently decided to use the wedding as a platform to get back at Alex in front of their friends and family.
On the day of the wedding, just like any typical bride, Casey was a ball of nerves. She wasn’t, however, concentrating on growing old together with her bridegroom but focusing on altogether different thoughts of revenge.
Reportedly she told Whimn, “This was supposed to be the happiest day of my life. Instead, I knew it was the end of my dream relationship, and everyone was going to witness it.”
After the “wedding”, Casey reportedly told friends that her white dress felt like a “costume” as she walked down the aisle, envisioning the dramatic moments to come.
You see, as she walked up to her waiting fiancé, she was never planning to recite any vows. She apparently dropped her bouquet and picked up her phone and got ready to read the incriminating messages aloud.
In Whimn she reportedly remembered the moment: “I stood at the front of the room in my wedding dress and looked out at the excited faces of our friends and family. My hands were shaking, but not nearly as much as my insides quivered.”
Casey then apparently began a mouth-dropping speech where she explained to everyone that there was “no wedding today.”
In her speech, she gave the audience all the dirty details about Alex and the mysterious other woman. She read the texts, many of which were sexually explicit and had extremely graphic details.
Including the one which stated: “Your body is f****** incredible. And s*** do you know how to use it. I wish my GF had half the skills you do.”
Another message read, “I miss you so much. I can’t stop thinking about L, S, F’ing you. I’ve never had this kind of connection before.”
Even though the texts were hurtful and gave out way too much information, Casey seemed to believe that reading them in front of everyone they know would shame and hurt Alex the same way he had shamed and hurt her.
When the truth was revealed, Alex apparently didn’t wait around for the fall out. In fact, he quickly left the church, leaving behind his friends and family in shock and still trying to come to terms with the harsh truth that was revealed.
It only seems fitting that Casey was left with the chance to say the last word and she offered anyone who wanted to stay and celebrate the option to do so.
Casey made a touching statement to the remaining guests: “I love all of you and as horrible as this is, I’m glad you all are here. There will not be a wedding reception today, but instead, there will be a celebration of honesty, finding true love and following your heart even when it hurts.”
Apparently, in spite of her heartache and the unusual ceremony, Casey managed to still enjoy “one hell of a party.”
When the story came out, Casey’s tale of revenge started spreading rapidly online. Elle Online even came up with a poll asking readers if they would have exposed their cheating fiancé at the altar.
It’s hard to believe, but around 60% of people thought Casey was totally on point and would have done the same thing. As the website states, their readers felt that dark deeds should be forced to “come to light.”
Casey received even more support and admiration from respondents on popular Irish website IrishCentral. Graham Houghton stated, “A very brave woman who deserves, and will certainly find, someone better. I wish her luck and happiness.”
Another online supporter was Will Agee who said, “Wow!! Very strong and forward thinking of her!! Honesty is the best policy with self and others!! Blessings all!!”
Another suggestion made by someone under the screen name “Intolerant Liberal” was that this story would be perfect as a Hollywood movie.
He stated, “Hollywood will no doubt be making a version, a rom-com, set in Boston, starring Brad Pitt as the baddie, Jennifer Aniston as the wronged, and a plethora of other B-list stars. There won’t be a dry eye in the house.” I would pay to see that, wouldn’t you?
