Michael Talley never dreamed of becoming a yellow bus driver, however, he did dream of having his own home. With a little more than $2000 and much more courage and passion than any of us could ever have, Talley bought a bus and made more than just one dream come true.
He Always Saw Beyond
Michael Talley was a talented man. He didn't have too much experience when it came to construction and building, however, when it came to design, Michale was a genius. He could see beyond what was lying in front of him, and he had the ability to make something out of nothing.
He was exceptional with everything he designed and had a unique and different touch. When it came to the bus he bought, he knew that hiring someone to assemble his dream was out of the question, and this was where he had to polish up his construction and building abilities.
He Was in for a Suprise
He made the decision to do everything by himself, but he had no idea what he was about to get into. He said, "I have never built anything. Ever. I've helped paint a few houses on mission trips, and I helped install some plastic lattice once, but that's about it."
Michael was lacking the expertise when it came to turning a bus into a dream home. When he first set eyes on the yellow bus that was up for sale, he saw beyond the damaged structure — he saw his home. Nothing and no one was going to take that away from him. But what made Michael decide to turn a bus into a home?
He Was About to Create a Miracle
The bus didn't have the ideal profile for turning it into a home, however, as we said earlier, Michael had the ability to see beyond. The bus had four walls, which was exactly what Michael needed. It had a roof, and with a few pieces of wood on the floor and a light bulb or two coming out of the ceiling, this was a good start as far as he was concerned.
Now, to some, turning an old bus into a home seemed like a great way to save money, however, most people around weren't aware of the severe situation Michael was in.
A $2000 Dream
After investing a little over $2000 on the bus, Michael was left with nothing. He decided to leave his apartment and put up a tent to sleep in. Being comfortable and warm at night was not at the top of his priority list, and sacrifices had to be made. At the time, he had been living in a studio apartment, which cost him almost $1200 a month, so sleeping rough for a while seemed like the best thing to do.
Michael would commute to work almost 40 minutes each day, but hey, there is no limit to what one would do just to make their lifelong dream come true.
A Difficult Start
2015 was a difficult year for Michael. That year he broke up with his girlfriend, which left him heartbroken. That same year his grandfather passed away, and on top of that, he lost his job. Things weren't going smoothly for Michael, and he knew that he needed a drastic change. It was either that or his life was about to go down the drain.
All he had was the bus, and he put every single thing he had into it. He invest every last penny and all the little strength he had into turning this yellow vehicle into something he could finally call home.
It Was Getting Busy
Building, constructing, and putting parts together were life saviors for Michael. It kept him occupied and productive and helped him put his grief and sorrow aside for a while. Michael hoped that concentrating on renewing the bus would eventually pave his new route in life. Little did he know, this renovation was about to pave much more.
Soon enough, Michael would realize things were not always going to sail smoothly, and this was going to be a bumpy ride. It was time to take a deep breath and come to terms with the fact that an uphill battle was on its way.
He Had to Go With the Flow
Initially, Michael was relying on using old furniture, but then he realized this was not going to be so easy. He was restless, he was losing sleep, and his brain was going a mile a minute. He had no idea how to start, and this was the hardest thing he ever approached in his life.
The first thing Michael had to do was to remove the bus seats that were still all in place at this stage. This would turn the bus into a completely empty container. Now Michael could see exactly how much space he had and plan accordingly.
Friends in Time of Need
Michael's stepdad helped out. If it wasn't for him, it would have taken him twice as long to get all the bolts from under the bus. The bus's full potential was revealed in front of Michael's eyes. Soon he could let his real talent shine and let the purpose of the project come to light.
Things were looking brighter, and Michael was getting that much closer to finally having his own place that he could call home. There was still a lot of work ahead and more obstacles he would have to work his way around. This was a great investment, but it had its downfalls too.
No One Knew About the Auction
Michael bought the bus from the Austin Independent School District. They auctioned about ten buses so they could do a test run on them, however, most people weren't aware that this was going on, which increased the odds of Michael bidding on one for a good price.
The first challenge, out of many, was solid and stable. This was something Michael had never thought of before and never considered an issue. As it turned out, he was too tall to stand inside the bus, and his head reached the ceiling. He had to work out a way so he could fit in and stand up straight without touching the roof.
Not Everything Was Easy
Michael said, "As soon as I stepped onto the bus for the first time, I knew me being 6'6" was going to be a huge problem. The ceiling is only 6'1, so I was going to have to do some MAJOR work to get this thing comfortable for my abnormally large body."
Michael cut a piece from the steel rib. He then went to a metal fabricator who made enough identical sleeves that fit perfectly on top of the rest of the ribs. This was done after they raised the roof, making the entire bus a few inches taller and spacious enough for Michael to walk about comfortably.
It Was Big
The bus suddenly looked as if it was double the size. It felt spacious and more inviting, and Michael couldn't wait to continue the work and turn this into his home. It was amazing how little work could bring so much change.
Michael realized that there was no room for mistakes. The space he had to work with was so narrow and small he had to be precise and accurate, and the measurements had to be spot on. Sometimes, in the late hours of the day, Michael began to ask himself if this was feasible or worth the effort. What other options did he have in life? Not too many, as it seemed.
The Finale Touch
The final design was done. Michael put everything he had into it and came up with the best he could. The public areas, such as the living room, were placed at the front of the bus, and the private rooms, his bedroom, for instance, were at the back.
This way, he could ensure that whenever he had friends or family over for a grill and chill, the facilities they needed were at the front, and there would be no need to go through the entire bus. He could already visualize the final outcome. This project was exciting, and he couldn't wait to complete it.
A TV Station
One of Michael's passions was movies. Scrolling through his social media accounts, there are numerous photos of him together with top-class celebs, and throughout his life, he always made sure to be updated about the latest movies out there.
When he was working on designing his home bus, he knew that there was one thing he could not give up on. A television screen was a must, and he had to make sure he had enough room for his extra-miniature home-style cinema, big enough to host himself and a few friends. He didn't mind living in a small place, and he was all for coziness, however, the screen was not negotiable.
One day, while Michael was cleaning up the bus after removing the seats, he came across a note that read, "kick me." This probably belonged to one of the kids that rode this bus, and the note was left behind. So many stories and so many precious moments that belonged to total strangers this bus carried.
Progress was moving fast, and things were beginning to fall into place. What started as a dream was soon becoming reality, and it was now time for Michael to create new stories and new precious moments to be engraved into the bus's wobbly walls.
Turning a bus into a liveable home doesn't come without challenges. The windows were the most challenging part. In a designer's kind of way, Michael wanted to keep the bus's windows as they were. They could look so unique and different than any other bus house seen before, but it could also be a problem.
Michael knew that the bus's original windows were old, and they rattled and weren't exactly solid and stable. Moreover, they would make it very hard for him to keep any isolation or privacy. There was no other option but to seal the windows and place just a few along the wall.
Food, Glorious Food
Television was not Michaels's only passion, as he was a huge foody too. This meant there was a lot of work and investment to be out in the kitchen. Michael was planning to prepare three meals a day and entertain on a regular basis, so he had to have an appropriate cooking area.
Known and loved, IKEA was having a sale on all their old kitchens, both cabinets, and equipment, and this came right in time for Michael and his bus of a dream. Somehow, he paid just $30 for everything. The butcher block he added was a little over $100, so altogether, he spent under $150 for an almost brand-new kitchen.
Welcome to Sofa City
Michael was over the moon. He was a free spirit and was able to do whatever he wanted. There were no boundaries or limitations to the design, and he could turn the bus into anything he wanted. It was like placing a child in an amusement park and he was able to go on any ride as many times as he wished.
One thing Michael brought with him from his old apartment was his couch. It was old and ragged, however, it had so much character, and Michael found it hard to part with. The only problem was, it didn't fit inside the bus.
A Personal Touch
Michael tore it apart. He took off the back part and separated the arm until he was left with just the cushions and spring base. He then redesigned the couch so it fit into the bus dimensions, giving the living room a touch of chic and style.
Almost everything was going to be handmade and custom designed for the dimensions of the bus. This place was for sure going to be unique, and Michael would definitely be able to call it home. It had his own touch and signature everywhere. What was next to follow, no one knew, but nothing was going to break him.
Michael took inspiration from everything that came his way. He never underestimated anything and embraced whatever he could. He was willing to learn from whoever wanted to teach and even found inspiration in "The Lost World: Jurassic Park" adventure vehicle.
He was single with no kids and didn't need much room, so putting in a twin bed was ideal. He loved the fact that the bathroom was going to be at the back of the bus, turning the rear section completely off-limits for others. Although he enjoyed entertaining, there was a limit to how much privacy he was willing to give up.
The Challenges Were Increasing
You may think that constructing and designing a bus is all fun, but in reality, there are more frustrating and challenging moments than fun and enjoyable ones. Things can turn ugly within no time and become dangerous even to the most experienced people out there.
Simple tasks, such as fixing a pipe, changing a light bulb, or using any electrical equipment, cannot be done just like that and require special attention. Michael had to take extra precautions, and occasionally he got a professional to do the work for him. Next on Michael's to-do list were the big questions he was avoiding from the start.
Stripping It All Apart
The key components of the bus could either be kept as they were or stripped apart completely. If they were kept and not touched, he would end up with a driveable bus, well, at least that's what it would look like from the outside, and Michael wasn't sure that's what he wanted.
Anything that had to do with the engine was challenging for Michael too. He managed to mess up the steering wheel and one day found himself stuck in the mud, where it was almost impossible for him to get out. We can't imagine what it must have been like to try and rescue a bus with no power steering.
No matter how talented or how efficient Michael was, he admitted he made some mistakes along the way. Take the roof, for example. He wished he would have left it as it was. Tearing it apart just lead to more issues and problems, and he felt he could have come up with a different solution.
He said that removing the bars and panels was a huge mistake, and the new roof, although looked great and enabled him to walk around freely in the bus, made the structure slightly less stable and a little less reliable. And this was not all. An unstable roof was the least of his problems.
Things Had to Go On
His body was not in great shape. He might have been working too hard and more than what his body could cope with, and he began to suffer from injuries and wounds. All this was making him work slower, and things were sliding out of schedule, however, he put on a brave face and continued the work.
Michael said, "First side done. Easily the most painful and bloody part of the build. Got a sweet permanent scar on my fore arm from when one of these steel sheets fell and sliced my arm open. Don't worry, I'll spare you the gory photos!"
Panels on the Roof
Being energy efficient was very important for Michael. He wanted to be as green as possible, recycle and reuse as many components as he could, and the next stage was installing solar panels. One thing Michael didn't know was that this was going to be the hardest part of the entire refurbishment.
Not only that — all the other friends who helped Michael out and shared their talent and abilities were preoccupied, so Michael found himself all alone on the most laborious aspect. It was now even harder than he thought it could be, and Michael had to find a way of doing this most efficiently.
That day, it was windier than usual, and Michael climbed on the roof, preparing himself to install the panels. Everything kept falling off, he couldn't keep himself still, and it turned into a day from hell. Michael was wishing for this day to be over with, so he could go back to the fun aspects of construction.
There were a few things that Michael was not willing to give up on and insisted on having. In his eyes, solar panels were full of character, represented his beliefs, and they are what eventually turned the bus into his own home sweet home.
Everything According to Plan
The floors had to be dark hardwood, the kitchen had to include a good butcher block, and the tiles had to be white, with a thin line of black grout. There was no other way as far as he was concerned.
Michael rolled up his sleeves and got work started. He did the entire tiling on his own. He admits that the final outcome was not perfect and there was room for improvement, however, this was his first attempt, and for a beginner, it was good enough. Michael was modest and never spoke highly of himself, however, no one could stay oblivious to the extraordinary work he did with the bus.
So, what made Michael initially want to convert the bus into a space he could live in? As it turns out, there was a fair share of history. The yellow bus was not just any old yellow bus — the two go back many years. It was an Armadillo, and Michael had two friends that rode this exact bus, which brought on many fond memories.
The bus was still glowing yellow, and Michael knew that was not going to last forever. If he wanted to sprinkle the finishing touch of magic, the bus had to be stripped of its natural color and turned into a dazzling white.
No Pain, No Gain
Besides a bedroom, kitchen, and somewhere to watch television, Michael also needed a place to work. He needed an office. He was a graphic designer who occasionally took on some freelance work, and a desk was essential. There was no way he could live in a place that would hold him back from working properly and making a living.
He managed to fit in a five-foot wide and two-foot deep table, which turned into the largest desk Michael had ever owned. So although the bus home was lacking in space in some areas, when it came to others, it was generous with what it provided.
Going Second Time Round
Michael even managed to recycle the wood he used for his desk. Talk about going green! He made an effort to use environmentally friendly wood and fabrics and didn't mind using second-hand, as long as it all merged peacefully and worked well with his overall design. And about the wood, you won't believe where Michael got the wood from.
Michael reclaimed the wood boards from an 80-year-old house in Hyde Park, Austin. He simply flipped the boards over and used them with the unfinished parts facing up. It was almost as good as new. This made everything in Michael's eyes so much more valuable and meaningful.
The New White Bus
In order to turn the bus into a home, the electricity and plumbing had to be done professionally, and in this case, only an expert will do. As soon as these aspects were taken care of, Michael could turn to carpentry. It seemed like a never-ending project, and when one thing was completed, the next was waiting just around the corner.
All the refurbishment was an emotional rollercoaster. It was exciting and hard at times, then frustrating and challenging at others. It was nerve-wracking, and there were times when Michael felt heartbroken for tearing down the bus that had such sentimental value to him.
April Fools You
The month of April was just around the corner, and Michael thought it could be a great opportunity to pull a prank on his friends. A bit of a sense of humor never hurt, and this could be a good cheer-up for everyone. Michael posted a photo on Facebook of the bus set on fire. Everyone freaked out, including his mother. It was frightening at first, but when they realized the date, they all had a great laugh.
It was now time to get back to serious business and complete the final stages of the project. He had to test the televisions and make sure they were working (there were two tv sets), and he had to run all necessary cables to connect his computer and speakers.
A Dream Come True
The bus was complete. Michael's dream home on wheels was done, and he was to begin his life in his new and cozy habitat. There were four walls, a high ceiling for him to stand tall, two televisions, a butcher board in the kitchen, and a refurbished couch to spend his indoor evenings. His outdoor space was inviting. It was warm, with plenty of places for grilling and chilling, and it all made Michael feel complete.
So although he had a different dream and never wished to become a bus driver, the wheeled yellow vehicle was there to make his dream come true and take him on a new path in life (and road).
This next story about Bruce Beach might not end in just reading his tale. You might want to adopt his way of living despite the outcomes. It all takes place in wild Canada and if it wasn't for evidential facts, we wouldn't have believed it ourselves. It's controversial, it's outrageous in many ways and it has been considered illegal too.
What started off more than 40 years ago as a project with no boundaries or set plan, has turned into an underground enigma. Read on as Bruce Beach's story is truly one of a kind.
He Wanted to Be Safe
Bruce was born in 1934 in Kansas. He witnesses the horrors the Vietnam War brought with it and the Cold War that came after. Following these events, Bruce and his wife decided to move to a safer, more secure environment and chose Canada as their new home.
Canada was neutral, it didn't have the controversial issues the USA had with the East and all they wanted was to live their life in tranquility and peace.
These were the 1970s, and Bruce wasn't the only one worried about the new reality that hit the world. The nuclear threat hovered over and no one had any idea what the future held.
Bruce felt that he couldn't let the great leaders of the world take ownership of his future so he decided to do something about it. Even he had no idea how outrageous his project would become.
He named his project "Ark Two," given his life mission. As he described it, the name only emphasized the importance and professionalism it would involve. There was another reason for naming the project "Ark Two".
Bruce had no intention of going on this adventure alone. He hoped like-minded people would follow and together, they could create something wonderful and great.
Going Up North
Canada was no strange land as Bruce's wife was a native. They moved to Horning's Mills, her hometown, and began living the rest of their life. Little did they know, that what they planned to be a safe and secure haven, would soon turn into a newspaper headline.
Horning's Mills was a relatively isolated place and just over an hour's drive from Toronto. It was picturesque and peaceful, but most of all, it was safe. Horning's Mills turned out to be the perfect place for Bruce to make his plan a reality.
Getting Down to Details
By 1980, his goal was already fully planned, the sketch was complete and he was ready to take things another step forward. For us, it would have seemed a ridiculous venture, however, it turned out to be the most incredible plan Ontario (or anywhere else) had ever seen.
Bruce had it all worked out. He could see into the future and he was always one step ahead. His masterpiece would start with one wrecked school bus but soon enough, this bus would turn into a kingdom.
It All Began With a Bus
In 1980, Bruce bought his first bus for $300. Soon enough he was the proud owner of several buses. He didn't care if they operated or not as he wasn't interested in their mobility or engines. All that mattered, was their structure.
Within no time he owned no less than 42 buses. They were all stacked next to each other in an old empty lot not far from his home. The 42 buses were enough for taking Brice on to the next level. It was now 1985 and things were about to escalate.
It Had to Be a School One
If you wonder why Bruce collected only school buses, it's because they are quite different than ordinary buses and it was their special features that would eventually make his project efficient.
As school buses are used mainly for children, they were constructed differently. Unlike regular buses, the school ones have an open floor plan. The second thing that came in handy was the fact that school buses had steel beams which made them safer.
Thanks to its unique design, a school bus can easily carry heavy weights such as big piles of heavy sand, something Bruce would later need for his craft. These buses were buried underground, and sand was essential.
Bruce completed setting up the 42 buses. It was now time to bring his creation to life. The walls of the buses turned into winding corridors and seat slots became storage niches. Rooms were born and before he knew it, his 12 acres of land were transforming into a metal and steel habitat.
A Little Help From a Friend
Bruce was in luck as like-minded wanderers volunteered to help. They rolled up their sleeves and although it took a few years, they finally completed constructing their new safe and secured home.
Bruce never thought it would take so much time. These were long and sometimes agonizing days, however, he was so determined to turn his dream into reality, there was no way of giving up. He was now ready for the next step.
The complex had to be sealed before pouring in the concrete and turning it into a permanent residence. Not only that, but by covering the buses with concrete he would isolate them from the outside world and keep his creation in hiding.
Bruce had no idea that it wouldn't be long before his 42 buses would catch the police's attention and cause disruption and concern. But why?
It Was Like No Other
"Ark Two" became the biggest structure in North America which was set underground. Yes, some of us might find it difficult to comprehend and see Bruce as an outrageous person, however, there is no doubt that on any scale, this was a great accomplishment.
Bruce created a 10,000 square feet bunker, and this bunker had the ability to be used as shelter during a nuclear blast. This astonishing place could accommodate almost 500 people at once. It was shocking that someone actually built it.
The Entire Community Could Fit In
It was designed in such a way, that it could house the entire community around them for several months. Bruce wasn't thinking only of himself, but he took his entire neighborhood into account. Now, if bruce thought constructing and pouring the cement was a challenge, there was more to come.
Bruce was passionate about "Ark Two". In fact, he was passionate about everything he did in life. There were no shortcuts, no easy ways, and whatever he touched was done to perfection.
Bruce took his project another step forward and consulted no less than Toronto's subway designer and engineer. This designer was responsible for the construction of the system too, so he reviewed Bruce's plans.
After inspecting it, he made a few changes. Now the plan of the site was complete, it was approved by a certified engineer (who even gave a few tips concerning the design) and Bruce could finally elevate his creation. Things were not going to stop there.
Preserving Their Spot
No matter how talented bruce was and no matter how passionate he was about bringing "Ark Two" alive, there was no way he could execute this alone. He needed a few more pairs of hands and a few more believers. Only like-minded souls could participate in such a project.
Luckily enough, Bruce had many friends to come and help, and there was a good number of volunteers that could see the potential "Ark Two" had. They all shared the same vision and they all shared the same fear.
50 Per Day
More than 50 people gathered each day and took part in constructing this gigantic creation. For most, this place would be a haven of safety and as they did not know what the future might bring, they felt they had to do everything in their power to secure themselves.
Some of the volunteers thought the whole idea was ridiculous, however, they still took part in constructing the site. But why? Why did people who had no interest in eventually using the concrete bus premises spare their time and help in bringing "Ark Two" to life?
Not All Were Believers
Bruce was no fool. He promised each person who helped built the site space in the shelter. He knew that this way he would keep the volunteers motivated and complete the construction of the shelter much faster. There was no time to waste.
Even the non-believers, and those who thought Bruce was talking nonsense, felt they had nothing to lose. If a nuclear threat would eventually become reality (although it was unlikely), they would have somewhere safe to go.
It Was Almost Ready
Bruce didn't expect much. He asked each volunteer to spare one or two weekends a year and dedicate them to the building of the underground shelter. They would have to carry out basic maintenance and ongoing renovation and in return, they would be safe.
Bruce was certain that sooner or later, a nuclear disaster would occur. There was no talking him out of it and the majority of the people around him felt and thought the same.
The Heavy Steel Door
Access to this modern cave was not as easy as entering a townhouse. There wasn't a door and a doorbell, and there weren't simple stairs to go down or climb up. The entrance to "Ark Two" was as complicated as the construction was.
Firstly, you had to assure you were permitted access as not everyone could simply enter. Once access was granted, the real challenge of actually getting into the place hit you.
A rusty old door stood between the real world and what would soon be discovered as an isolated shelter from a modern threat against humanity, as seen through Bruce's eyes.
This door was the only part of the Ark visible to the outside world. Behind that door stood a power generator and from there on, the underground labyrinth began.
The Living Area
Moor than 14 feet separated the ground level from the actual habitat. The living area of this place was hidden deep below. So, you might have thought that getting into the shelter was the main obstacle, however, once in, bigger issues were awaiting.
The living area down below was so compressed and lacking natural airflow, that if one person carried a virus or some sort of illness, the outcome would have been chaotic.
An Improvised Cleansing Spot
Without a proper medical center and without professional sickness screening, some individuals could inadvertently bring with them all sorts of infections and diseases. This could harm hundreds.
Such an incident could mark the end of an entire community as the shelter was intended to house all residents around. Instead of being a shelter of safety, it would turn into a mass grave.
Bruce, as always, thought a few steps ahead and built a decontamination chamber at the entrance to the shelter, right after the heavy steel door. This was to reduce any risk of contamination and of spreading of disease.
Bruce built this chamber to perfection. It had a double sink made of stainless steel, a shower for adults, and a bathtub for children and disabled people. It even had a food decontamination section! If Bruce was going to do something, he was going to do it properly.
More Was Needed
The chamber at the entrance to his underground world was not the only professionalized room. Those entering the enigma would need more than a sterilization unit to survive. Electricity, fresh running water, and much more were essential. Bruce thought of all this way in advance and an entire plumbing system was planned and installed underneath the living areas.
It ran along the entire premises and ended in a septic tank. The bunker had access to potable water from a nearby well, making the stay as convenient as possible.
Three Months of Solitude
Diesel generators full of fuel were scattered around the shelter which made it possible to live for almost three months. Bruce planned his haven in such a way that nothing would come as a surprise.
So, besides Bruce, who obviously thought wonders of his project, what did others think of it, and more importantly, what did other "Preppers" think of it?
Preppers are people who live in a joint community and share the same thoughts and beliefs. They believe that catastrophes are bound to hit the earth and sense that chaos is always awaiting them. Bruce Beach was part of this community.
Many Preppers thought that his project, "Ark Two" was absolutely phenomenal and something to be proud of. It was like being in outer space or in a different universe. No one could believe that Bruce built this amazing habitat from 42 wrecked school buses. It was incomparable to anything else.
Food, Glorious Food
Food was another essential item bruce didn't neglect. Two kitchens, which were more like industrial or restaurant kitchens, were constructed in the shelter. One was designed for preparing food and the other for cleaning and washing up.
Across the corridor from them, two enormous storage rooms were built, each full of dry food, cans, pantry supplies, and anything with a long duration date. At first, Bruce thought that the food issue was the least of his problems, however, he was wrong. The food turned out to be the biggest problem he had.
Tons and Tons
The shelter was supposed to cater to almost 500 people at once which turned it to be one of his greatest obstacles to confront. “I don’t know how many tons of food we have had to throw out over the years," Beach said once to the 'National Post'.
The shelter was on standby for almost thirty years and during these years, canned goods, preserved items, and long-lasting goods were replaced on so many occasions, over and over again.
All Essentials Were Granted
Now, food, clean water to bathe in, and other essential needs were not the only things these people needed. Every demand had to be answered in one way or the other, and there was no way of bypassing anything. As we explained, these "Preppers" really did believe the end of the world was coming.
The living areas consisted not only of bedrooms but also classrooms for the children, a library, a communication center, a dentist and doctor's clinic, and believe it or not, a mortuary.
It looks as if Bruce had it all planned. He took everything into consideration assuring all who entered the Ark would be granted a comfortable and pleasurable life in the shelter.
Having said that, and with all the facilities Bruce and the Ark provided, it was no luxury hotel. There were downfalls to such a place and the ones who entered had to be prepared.
Families Were Separated
"Ark two" was designed in such a way that keeping families together was not always possible. The shelter had to house as many people as possible which meant, men were on one side, and women and children were on the other.
It was only the sleeping accommodations that were separate as for the rest of the time, families could be joined. The living spaces were relatively spacious and comfortable.
A Children's Place
Going to school in such a claustrophobic environment wasn't an easy thing so Bruce has to think of a creative way to make life bearable for the children.
Bruce built a colorful and bright playground. It consisted of educational toys alongside traditional games and it had plenty of room for the kids to hang about.
Communication Was Never a Barrier
We know the shelter was built in such a way that if (or when) catastrophe hit, the residents of "Ark Two" could stay safely underground for a good number of months. However, Bruce never forgot about communicating with the outside world.
The bunker was equipped with an advanced and super-innovative radio system that could send and receive messages on AM and FM frequencies. It was so strong it could reach all over North America.
Preparing the Preppers
Going back to the Preppers, those who prepare themselves for the worst and believe chaos was on its way. As it goes, National Geographic found this phenomenon quite fascinating.
Bruce was featured on one of the episodes of "Doomsday Preppers", a TV documentary created by NatGeo. Bruce wasn't so enthusiastic about this whole idea as he didn't want to be categorized under any group or definition. He was different.
The Community Was One
Bruce believed that most Preppers were self-centered and thought mainly about their own well-being and their own safety. Bruce, on the other hand, was driven by completely other things. He was driven by the desire to help others and he considered his community as a whole.
He was a philanthropist. He contributed enormously to society, and never put himself before the rest, however, there were many who thought and felt otherwise.
Trouble Was Calling
Apparently, the government of Ontario was not very happy with "Ark Two". They saw it as an environmental hazard and apparently, spent a big portion of its financial budget trying to close it down.
The shelter was built on Bruce's private property, so what was the problem? Well, apparently, he didn't have any permits. The authorities had every good reason to trouble Bruce and demand he closes the place down.
Service to All
Trying to pave his way out, Bruce explained that he considered "Ark Two" as a service for the public. He went on and said that the shelter he built was open for anyone who was seeking safety and sanctuary.
There was no plan to refuse entry to anyone who didn't think alike, there was no intention to restrict anything or anyone. His purpose was to save and protect as many people as possible.
A Legal Matter
Bruce's explanations weren't enough. The authorities were not convinced and he found himself going in and out of courtrooms, not once, not twice but over 30 times.
Another department that wasn't very happy with the bunker was the fire department. They said the site was a fire hazard. They have even managed to close down the place on more than one occasion. Bruce felt this whole parade was illegal.
A Hazard Area or a Haven of Safety?
Bruce felt the authorities were missing the whole point of his project. Instead of focusing on the main purpose and what he was trying to accomplish, they were too busy categorizing the shelter as a hazard area.
He claimed that his bunker was exactly the opposite of something that is dangerous or toxic. "Ark Two" was a protective place against a destructive situation. In his eyes, it was the exact opposite.
It Was Only a Matter of Time
Bruce was a true believer in the occurrence of a third world war. He was certain sooner or later something would hit home. He had a rich history in the US air force, and he had great knowledge of computer science.
There was no way anyone could tell him otherwise, however, he found it almost impossible to try to convince the authorities about the future awaiting them all. He was ready to take his project even another step forward.
It Could Only Go His Way
Bruce once said, "I used to always say the end of the world was going to be two years from now, but now I say it is going to be two weeks from now — and if I am wrong, I will revise my date." He was determined and decisive.
He was now ready for the next step. He ran an online "reconstruction network" and he named it SAFE. He voluntarily shared relevant information about his project "Ark Two" and his evacuation plans.
There is more behind the name SAFE. It stands for "Safe America for Everyone". This meant his home, shelter, and heart were open to everyone, regardless of religion, color, gender, or beliefs.
Bruce said that he was an optimist when it came to mankind, however, he couldn't help being a pessimist when it came to the near future. He knew a disaster was just around the corner, but he felt it would be an opportunity to change our ways significantly.
They Would All Benefit
He believed a better, healthier, and more stable society would be born out of the chaos. A more open-minded and more accepting society.
Everything had a reason, and whatever was planned to hit them had reasoning too. Something good had to come out of it and he wanted to get people thinking and reordering their priorities in life.
The World Thought Otherwise
Bruce was so enthusiastic about his plans, however, the world had its own plans too. He sadly passed away at the age of 87, way before the world came to an end. He was a great believer in unity and harmony but he forgot one important thing.
He spent almost half of his life preparing for the future while neglecting the present and all it had to offer. Today, his wife and family are left wondering what would have happened if only Bruce's plans would have really come true.
